Toronto Maple Leafs lose to Edmonton Oilers 6-4
The Leafs gave up an early 1-0 lead to the Oilers in the first period and could not overcome it Monday night at ScotiaBank Arena in downtown Toronto.
Toronto started out slow and were blown away by Connor McDavid, in a high scoring affair which saw McDavid score or assist on 4 of Edmonton’s six goals.
Oscar Klefbom snapped one in from the point just 7 minutes into the first period opening the scoring and giving the Edmonton Oilers a one to nothing lead.
Edmonton came out flying in the second period scoring two goals in under two minutes. Darnell Nurse scored on a nice feed from McDavid just 34 seconds into the frame while Kailer Yamamoto scored one minute and forty-five seconds into the period.
The Leafs were able to score three in the second period but were never able to overcome the Oilers scoring spree. Jason Spezza, Pierre Engvall, Fredreik Gauthier, and Auston Matthews were the goal scorers for the Leafs.
Toronto’s strength since newly appointed coach Sheldon Keefe took over has been winning these fast paced high scoring games, but tonight they could not pull it off.
Connor McDavid had a monster night 4 point night with one goal an 3 assists on 8 shots.
Leafs netminder Fredrick Anderson was pulled early in the second period while giving up 3 goals on 19 shots. Coach Keefe said post game that “I just did not want Freddy playing behind that.”
Mike Smith posted a .889 save percentage, saving 32 of 36 shots for Edmonton in the win.
The Leafs will look to bounce back from their loss to the Oilers on home ice Wednesday night when they have rematch against the Winnipeg Jets. Puck drop is 7:30 EST.
