The 2021 MLS season has not been kind to the Toronto FC thus far. With only one victory since the start of the season, they sit well outside of the playoff picture at 12th in the eastern conference. Further ground was lost Saturday night after a 1-0 regulation loss to Orlando City.
Tesho Akindele had the game’s only goal, coming in the 12th minute. The Orlando striker beat Toronto goalkeeper Alex Bono with a perfectly-placed header off a quality cross from midfielder Silvester van der Water.
Toronto FC held the edge in shots, corners, and crosses but couldn’t finish off any plays. On multiple occasions Orlando goalie Pedro Gallese was caught out of position, but their stout defence stepped up to preserve the clean sheet.
