The Toronto Maple Leafs came away with three of a possible four points in the club’s final two games against the Edmonton Oilers. Following Edmonton’s loss against the Canadiens yesterday, the Leafs are now in position to extend their lead at the top of the NHL’s north division. The only thing standing in the way of that goal, however, is the Winnipeg Jets.
After beating the Leafs in their previous three-game series, the Toronto Maple Leafs should look to quiet their rising division opponent. To do that, the Leafs will have to overcome their recent goalie woes on both sides of the puck. Last time these two teams met, the Jets star netminder Connor Hellebuyck proved to be an immense challenge for the then waning Maple Leafs. But with a solid point streak behind them, the Leafs are looking to continue their forward momentum with the 6-0 Jack Campbell in net.
While the Leafs are favoured at -140, it will likely be an explosive and competitive game versus two of the NHL’s most lethal offensive cores. Catch this game tonight at 7:30PM EST on Sportsnet.
The main difference between last game and tonight’s game was the goaltending. Jack Campbell’s quick 4-game winning streak has quickly become a 7-0 trend. In tonight’s battle for the NHL North Division, the 29-year-old netminder saved 26 of 27 shots for an astounding .963 save percentage.
Another standout from this game was the Toronto Maple Leafs’ top line. Reuniting Zach Hyman with Matthews and Marner has completely unlocked the Maple Leafs offence. In the first period alone the Leafs’ top line accounted for six points. Over the course of the game the line put up 11 shots on goal whilst allowing zero goals against. If the Leafs stay locked in like this, they could look to extend their lead at the top of the North.
