Washington Capitals 4, Toronto Maple Leafs 3
The Toronto Maple Leafs led the Washington Capitals 2-1 on Wednesday night after the opening period.
However, the second frame did not go according to plan for Mike Babcock’s side.
The Capitals stunned the Leafs over a 78-second stretch, as the visiting side surrendered three goals and trailed 4-2.
The first came five minutes into the period when Evgeny Kuznetsov showed off some classy stick-work. He manoeuvred to his backhand before sliding the puck past Michael Hutchinson.
It took all of eleven seconds for the Capitals to net another goal when Nicklas Backstrom fired in.
John Carlson added some insurance for the Capitals just over a minute later on. This came after some neat one-time movement. Alex Ovechkin and Backstrom earned assists on the play.
Meanwhile, Hutchinson remained in the net after the Washington surge. But the Leafs ultimately lost 4-3.
A pair of goals by the Leafs gave them an early lead midway through the first period. However, Jakub Vrana cut the deficit in half entering the first break.
Toronto took the early lead off a short-handed goal from Kasperi Kapanen. Jonas Siegenthaler then was slow to react to Ilya Mikheyev who pounced to put the Maple Leafs ahead by two.
The Leafs would score another late goal to attempt a comeback but ultimately they fell short.
