It’s happened again for Toronto FC. They have reached the MLS Cup final for the third time in four seasons.
The match-winning goal game with 12 minutes remaining as Nick DeLeon dumped the reigning champions out of the competition.
DeLeon was in excellent form throughout the game, but his curling effort was certainly the pick of the bunch for the travelling side.
The hosts controlled much of the game and were visibly upset when the goal was awarded as they believed that there had been a foul in the build-up.
Fortunately, the referee didn’t see anything, and TFC got away with it. It was a nervous last final couple of minutes as Atalanta pushed for the equalising goal.
There were a few close calls, but Quentin Westberg was able to keep them at bay to ensure that TFC made history.
It could have all been so different for TFC as Atlanta went ahead in the fourth minute through Julian Gressel.
However, the pattern of the game was changed when Westberg made a brilliant save from a Josef Martinez penalty. If he would have scored that, then the match would have been out of reach.
Nicolas Benezet put TFC back on level turns less than five minutes later.
Toronto now heads to face Seattle Sounders in the final, after they had upset Los Angeles FC to win the western final.
