TFC 2-1 Montreal Impact
Rivalry week is one of the best times of the MLS season if your team are successful, and TFC fans can breathe a sigh of relief as for much of their game against Montreal it didn’t seem that they would be the ones celebrating.
Greg Vanney adjusted his team selection to combat the defensive issues that Toronto have experienced over recent weeks. And, the move paid off.
However, it was the Impact that took the lead. On a rare foray forward Bojan Krkic found space and found the back of the net. The lead didn’t last long though.
In fact, TFC struck back 14 minutes later when Marco Delgardo found the back of the net after an excellent run from second-half substitute Alejandro Pozuelo. It was nothing less than Toronto‘s play deserved. The introduction of Pozuelo revitalised the home side, and the inspirational Spaniard was involved in everything good that TFC did.
The hosts then completed the turnaround with nine minutes remaining when Justin Morrow found the net after neat interplay between himself Michael Bradley and Jozy Altidore. Morrow’s finish had just enough power on it to beat the Impact goalkeeper and the stadium erupted.
It was the very least that TFC deserved as they dominated the possession. The home side enjoyed 53% of the play. Vanney’s side will now be hoping that they can deliver a first trophy of the season when the sides meet in the Canadian Championship final in a few weeks time. The first leg will be played in Montreal, before the return leg a week later in Toronto.
TFC dominated the game throughout and registered 19 shots on goal compared to Montreal’s three. Vanney would have been pleased with his side, and now all eyes will be on next weekend’s clash with the New England Revolution as Toronto look to keep hold of their playoff spot.
