Toronto Maple Leafs lose to Pittsburgh Penguins 5-2
Toronto went into Tuesday nights matchup with the Penguins in desperate need for a victory.
The Maple Leafs were looking to rebound from their lack lustre effort against Buffalo Sunday.
Toronto would ultimately come up short against the Penguins losing 5-2.
With the loss the Leafs have now lost 6 of their last 9 games.
Pittsburgh was on the Leafs from the jump taking a 2-0 lead in the first.
Bryan Rust opened the scoring at 11:41 in the first followed by a goal from Anthony Angello less than six minutes later.
There were five goals scored in the second period.
The Penguins would score three goals in the period while the Leafs would tally two goals late in the second.
Jason Zucker, Sidney Crosby, and Teddy Blueger were the goal scorers for Pittsburgh.
Auston Matthews and Jake Muzzin would add the tallies for the Leafs.
No goals were scored in third leaving the final score at 5-2.
The Leafs were able to muster 36 shots on goal on Tuesday but the Penguins were able to manufacture the better of the scoring chances.
Toronto went 0 for 3 on the power play in the game while Pittsburgh was able to capitalize on all three of their power play opportunities.
Fredrik Andersen got the start in net for Toronto, saving 19 of 24 shots he faced posting a .792 save percent.
Pittsburgh’s Tristan Jarry shined in the game saving 34 of the 36 shots he faced posting a .944 save percentage.
The Leafs will now have to regroup quickly as they will have to play the same Penguins team Thursday night at Scotiabank Arena.
