Toronto Maple Leafs 5, Ottawa Senators 3

The Toronto Maple Leafs kicked off their 2019-20 NHL season with a hard-fought 5-3 win over the visiting Ottawa Senators on the opening night.

There is a lot of expectation from fans this year that the Leafs should be competing with the best in the league for the Stanley Cup, but on this viewing, there is still some way to go.

Toronto fell behind in the first period, before quickly scoring four in the second to pull ahead of the Senators.

The Leafs added a fifth in the final period, but defensively there will still be a question whether this Toronto side can stay the course all season.

There was a brace for Auston Matthews in the season opener, while Iilkay Mikheyev and Trevor Moore also got their names on the scoresheet.

Frederik Andersen was back in between the sticks for the Leafs after missing much of pre-season. He made 26 saves in the win, and that included an eye-catching stop in the third to ensure the end was as comfortable as it was.

The Leafs continue their season with a trip to the Blue Jackets in their next fixture in the NHL.

Peace,

Burke.
