With pressure mounting team decides to drop longtime name

The Edmonton Eskimos announced Thursday that they will be changing their name.

With pressure mounting around the franchise, the team has decided to change its name that has long thought to be insensitive to indigenous peoples.

The announcement comes on the heels that the Washington Redskins of the NFL will change their name.

Edmonton has had the name under review for sometime but ultimately decided to change its name due to mounting pressure.

CFL league sponsors have expressed a desire to see a name change in Edmonton.

Insurance company Belairdirect, said it would drop its sponsorship should a name change not occur.

Earlier on Wednesday, Sports Book Interaction, the teams official and exclusive online casino and sporting gaming partner officially asked the team to change its name

With pressure mounting and sponsorships at stake the franchise had few options.

Just another example of how social pressure and the desire to create a more equal world can only make things better for all.

The franchise has held the nickname since its inception in 1949.
