Sergio Santos scored three goals as the Union dominated a beat up Toronto side on Saturday night.
With the win Philadelphia moves into first place in the MLS and first place in the eastern conference.
Toronto’s lineup was missing a number of players due to injury, and Philadelphia wasted little time taking advantage of it.
Philadelphia was up 2-0 after 33 minutes against the Reds.
Jozy Altidore, Chris Mavinga, Ayo Akinola, and Pablo Piatti were all unavailable for Toronto on Saturday.
With four starters out its tough to win in any league and the MLS is no different.
One bright spot for Toronto is that Micheal Bradley made his return from injury against the Union.
The appearance marked Bradley’s 200th career MLS appearance.
5-0 is Torontos worst performance of the season but injuries can be to blame for sure.
On top of the Santos hat-trick on Saturday night, Mark McKenzie and Jamiro Monteiro added a goal a piece to bring the total to five.
The Reds will look to have a short memory as they look to rebound from the loss to the Union.
Toronto will now have some much needed time off to prepare for their next match on Wednesday in New York.
The Reds are still in second place and only trail the first place Union in goal differential.
Toronto will take on the fifth place NYC FC looking to get back into that top spot.
New York FC and Toronto FC will clash at 7:30pm EST.
