Blue Jays use 5th overall pick to grab Martin
The Blue Jays used their 5th overall pick Wednesday to draft Austin Martin.
A utility man, Martin has been pegged as the best pure hitter in this years draft.
When he fell to the Blue Jays it was a no brainer.
The 21 year old prospect out of Vanderbilt was number two on baseball americas prospect list.
Amateur scouting director for the Jays Scott Farrell was surprised Martin was available to Toronto and was very willing to draft him.
“He was the best player still on the board,” said Farrell.
Martin played 140 career NCAA games over three seasons.
Martin batted .368/.474/.532 with 85 walks. In 2019, his last full season, he had 105 hits in 65 games with 10 home runs and 46 RBIs.
His ability to play multiple positions makes him a valuable asset for the Jays going forward.
Martin can play a multitude of positions including 3rd base and shortstop.
The Blue Jays, who were 67-95 last season, will also select Nos. 42, 77, 106 and 136 overall in this years draft.
The Jays have a little over nine million to spend in signing bonuses for drafted players six of which can be spent on Martin.
