TFC 1-0 Columbus Crew

Toronto FC finished the season boasting a ten-game undefeated streak. They capped this run with a 1-0 win over the Columbus Crew at BMO Field on Sunday afternoon. The only goal of the game came from  Alejandro Pozuelo’s free-kick.

In the first half, it was USA international’s providing the best chances for both sides. For the Crew, it was Gyasi Zardes. He got free on a breakaway in the 22nd minute, only for Quentin Westberg to save his attempt.

TFC’s chances came later in the half. That started in the 34th minute, when Jozy Altidore went just wide on a shot after breaking the defensive line. Shortly after this, Michael Bradley was denied by Eloy Room.

However, Pozuelo was finally able to break the deadlock in the 58th minute. He took the free kick that Altidore earned just outside the 18-yard box. It froze Room on a shot that nestled nearly dead center in the back of the net.

Pozuelo nearly had a role in doubling the lead just four minutes later. He served up a chance for substitute Nicolas Benezet. However, he just missed on his slide in front of goal.

Luis Diaz was nearly able to get the Crew level in the 64th minute. However, Westberg was able to tip the shot away to safety. That would be the closest the visitors would get to keep their own five-game unbeaten streak going.

Patrick Mullins, traded from Columbus to Toronto in July, nearly scored twice in stoppage time but couldn’t secure the insurance goal. But, it didn’t matter in the end.

Peace,

Burke.
