Kylian Mbappe scores the only goal of the game for PSG
Paris St Germain forward Kylian Mbappe scored his 27th goal of the season. As the runaway leaders edged closer to the Ligue 1 title with a hard-fought 1-0 win at Toulouse on Sunday.
Mbappe struck in the 74th minute to put PSG on 80 points from 29 games and on the brink of retaining their title with second-placed Lille, who beat Nantes 3-2 away earlier on Sunday, still 20 points behind having played a game more.
“We had to wait. Be patient and in the end we won with Kylian’s speed,” said PSG skipper Marquinhos. “It brought a great deal of joy to our fans. I’m sure of that.”
Thomas Tuchel’s side will be crowned champions next weekend if they beat Racing Strasbourg and Lille fail to win at Stade de Reims.
PSG are looking to become the first club in the French top flight to reach 100 points and to beat the record of most goals scored (118). The record is currently held by RC Paris in the 1959-60 season.
PSG was without Neymar. Who is still nursing a foot injury. Meanwhile, Argentine winger Angel Di Maria and Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani were also missing. Meaning the scoring responsibility was left to Mbappe.
The world champion duly delivered.
Coach Thomas Tuchel said he was delighted that the runaway leaders have not been tempted to take their foot off the gas. “Many of our players were away in the international break. And there was a bit of fatigue in some of them,” said the German. “It could have been tempting to relax. Especially with the lead, we have in the league. But nobody does it. I like that.”
PSG dominated but Eric Choupo-Moting skied a sitter over the bar and Marquinhos had a goal disallowed for offside after a VAR review.
Mbappe, however, found the back of the net with a neat strike from inside the area from a Thilo Kehrer cross 16 minutes from time.
However, Paris Saint-Germain coach Thomas Tuchel said on Saturday he didn’t want to give a potential date for the injured Neymar’s return to action. Adding however that the Brazilian star was feeling good.
“Neymar is feeling good, no pain. But it’s too early to talk about his comeback. Because we must be patient,” said Tuchel.
“It’s tough for me and even tougher for him. The sole solution is to be patient. He has some time to make his return. I don’t want to tell you a date.”
The 27-year-old Neymar was injured in the January 23 Cup match against Strasbourg. However, PSG said at the time they expected him to be out for 10 weeks.
Lille claimed an impressive comeback win at Nantes.
The Canaries were 2-0 up after a penalty by Valentin Eysseric and a second-half strike from Kalifa Coulibaly.
However, the visitors, however, turned the situation around in eight minutes.
Rafael Leao volleyed home to reduce the arrears in the 62nd minute and Nicolas Pepe levelled with a penalty in the 68th before Jonathan Bamba gave the northerners all three points a minute later by poking the ball home from Pepe’s cross.
Lille lead third-placed Olympique Lyonnais, who beat Stade Rennais 1-0 away on Friday, by four points.
