Neymar and Mbappe goals not enough to claim Paris St-Germain’s 15th straight win
Paris St-Germain dropped points for the first time in Ligue 1 this season and lost Neymar to injury as they drew with Bordeaux.
PSG twice took the lead, through star forwards Neymar and Kylian Mbappe. But substitute Andreas Cornelius leveled for the hosts with a fine glancing header from a cross in the 84th minute.
Neymar gave Paris St-Germain the lead in the 34th with a neat volley from inside the penalty area. However, he went off around 10 minutes into the second half and headed straight to the dressing room.
It was not immediately clear if he had picked up an injury. Neymar exited with an apparent groin injury during Brazil’s friendly match against Cameroon.
Their 14-game winning start was a record for any of Europe’s top five leagues. Paris St-Germain still sit 14 points clear of second-placed Montpellier.
The result happened on the same day as PSV Eindhoven lost their 100% start in the Dutch Eredivisie in their 14th game.
Paris-St Germain now face an anxious wait over the extent of Neymar’s latest injury.
Neymar will miss the trip to Strasbourg on Wednesday. But boss Thomas Tuchel hopes the problem is not serious and that he will return when Montpellier visit the Parc des Princes on December 8.
“We must be careful. He said that it was not a problem to play tonight but the ground was hard. We made the decision with everyone, Neymar, the physio, that he did not take any risk to play,” said Tuchel.
Tuchel continued: “Neymar felt good but by the time he felt something he came out on time. We will leave him alone against Strasbourg and he will be ready, I hope, against Montpellier.”
Neymar’s 11th league goal of the season went to a video review before being awarded. It seemed harsh on Bordeaux, considering Mbappe appeared marginally offside and to be slightly obscuring the view of goalkeeper Benoit Costil when the ball went in.
After veteran forward Jimmy Briand equalized with a well-worked goal in the 54th minute. Mbappe sprinted through to collect Julian Draxler’s pass and slot home the second in the 66th.
“We wanted to beat them, we can be proud of the fact we’re the first team to take points from them,” Briand said. “We tried to be aggressive, because we know they don’t like it.”
Paris St-Germain could have scored more. Winger Angel Di Maria hit the post and the crossbar. But slack defending allowed Cornelius enough space to salvage a point for 11th-place Bordeaux.
“It was a very tight game. They were very strong tactically,” PSG defender Marquinhos said. “They deserved it, they played the right way.”
Tuchel told the club’s official website: “We lost a little intensity in the second half. Bordeaux took their chance by scoring the equalizer. Even if we should have scored a second goal at the end of the first half.
“We had the chance to extend our lead when we were 2-1 up, we had a lot of chances and could have had two penalties.”
Next up for Paris St-Germain is a trip to Strasbourg on Wednesday.
