Ottawa Senators 4, Toronto Maple Leafs 3
The season hasn’t even started yet, but already the Ottawa Senators are feeling pretty good about themselves after beating the Toronto Maple Leafs on back-to-back nights in St John’s.
Brady Tkachuk’s empty-net goal wound up to be the winner as the Senators held on for a 4-3 win on Wednesday night.
Connor Brown, Max Veronneau and Tyler Ennis also scored as the Senators stayed unbeaten in pre-season.
Meanwhile, Craig Anderson allowed one goal off 21 shots through two periods. Filip Gustavsson took over in the third and gave up two goals off 18 shots.
Auston Matthews was making his preseason debut. He didn’t miss a step and scored twice for the Leafs. Meanwhile, Nick Shore also scored.
Michael Hutchinson gave up three goals off 20 shots through two periods. Brandon Halberson took over during the third and faced six efforts.
Matthews was excited to get back to work after a week of training and watching the team in action from the sidelines on Tuesday night.
Speaking after the defeat, he said: “Obviously it feels good to get back into a game. It’s our first game so you’re not really sure what to expect, just trying to get back into it, get your timing back and get adjusted with your line-mates.”
The Leafs were trailing 2-0 before they cut the lead in half during the second period on a delayed penalty call as Matthews played a give-and-go with Morgan Rielly before beating Anderson.
However, the Senators regained their two-goal lead less than two minutes later as Ennis picked up the puck in the slot and rifled a shot past Hutchinson.
Ottawa got off to a good start taking a 2-0 first period lead with goals from Borowiecki and Veronneau.
