Toronto Blue Jays 3, Montreal Canadiens 0
Auston Matthews scored, while Frederik Andersen made 26 saves as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Montreal Canadiens 3-0 on Wednesday in a pre-season friendly.
Meanwhile, Trevor Moore had a goal and an assist, while John Tavares also scored for the Leafs. Furthermore, Mitch Marner contributed two assists.
Keith Kinkaid stopped 46 shots for the Canadiens.
The Leafs took the ice just over 24 hours after news broke that Matthews is facing a charge of disorderly conduct and disruptive behaviour following an alleged incident in his hometown of Scottsdale, Ariz., back in May.
Matthews made a brief statement but didn’t take any questions on the matter.
Matthews played with regular linemates William Nylander and Andreas Johnsson, scored on a third-period power-play following a great feed from Marner.
Andersen has allowed just the one goal in seven periods of pre-season action.
Toronto started with what should largely amount to their NHL line up. Excluding the injured forward Zach Hyman and defenceman Travis Dermott (shoulder). It is expected this will be the starting team when they open the season against the Ottawa Senators on October 2nd.
Montreal had about half of what’s expected to be their roster when they kick things off on the 3rd October in Carolina against the Hurricanes.
Montreal and the Leafs will meet for real on the 5th October back at Scotiabank Arena on the first Saturday night of the 2019-20 schedule.
