Toronto Maple Leafs 5, Ottawa Senators 3
Auston Matthews scored two goals to help the Toronto Maple Leafs defeat the Ottawa Senators 5-3 on Wednesday evening in the curtain-raiser of the 2019-20 NHL season.
In a pre-game ceremony, the Toronto squad named John Tavares as the 25th captain. Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and Morgan Rielly were appointed as his assistants.
In his first NHL career match, Ilya Mikheyev had one goal and one assist. Meanwhile, Frédérik Gauthier and Trevor Moore also hit the target for the Maple Leafs.
Acquired in a deal with the Colorado Avalanche during the offseason, defenseman Tyson Barrie has assisted two goals for Mike Babcock’s men. Frederik Andersen stopped 23 shots in the win.
Matthews now has nine goals and two assists in his four opening games since the start of his career. He had scored four goals against the Senators in 2016.
Tavares took the title that had been left vacant since Dion Phaneuf’s swap in February 2016. The 29-year-old center made the agreement with the Maple Leafs on Thursday.
Maple Leafs tied the game through Gauthier at 2:20 of the second. Moore gave the lead to the home team just over two minutes later.
Sabourin brought the two teams back level after he put the finishing touches on a nice exchange with Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Filip Chlapik. The Senators thought they had taken the lead at 7:28 when Ron Hainsey deceived Andersen, but the decision was made that the puck went out of play.
The Maple Leafs face the Detroit Red Wings next on Friday evening.
