Blue Jays 7, Royals 3
Cavan Biggio hit a go-ahead solo home run during the eighth innings, before adding an RBI single in a three-run ninth as the visiting Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Kansas City Royals.
Meanwhile, Teoscar Hernandez also hit a solo home run. While Randal Grichuk also hit a two-run shot and had three RBIs for the Jays in the opener of their three-game series. Tim Mayza pitched around a single in the seventh inning to earn his side the win.
However, Royals starter Brad Keller, who had won his three previous starts and four straight decisions, allowed just four runs over eight hits and no walks while striking out five in seven-plus innings.
Also, Bo Bichette rapped a clean single in the first at-bat of his MLS career. He was greeted by his parents after the win. Reflecting on this to the press after the Jays win. He said: “I don’t even remember what my mom said. My dad said, ‘Congratulations Bo. You’re a big leaguer now.”
The promotion for Bichette came just 24 hours after Marcus Stroman completed his move to the Mets. Charlie Montoyo was pleased with how his debut went. Speaking to the press after the win, he spoke about both Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. He said: “They’ve got the tools to be here. It’s just the mental grind of being here.”
“Of course, this is the best baseball of anywhere you’re going to face. Because you’re going to go through ups and downs. It depends on how strong you are here” — he pointed to his head — “how long you can go. It’s about staying even-keeled at this level.”
The Jays continue the series on Tuesday.
